Topic 1 seeks to challenge participants to formulate a concept master plan to guide the rejuvenation of the Power District. This master plan should provide a clear and coherent structure for creation of an attractive, differentiated destination with:

New uses for old buildings: Given the large, voluminous spaces of power stations ‘A’ and ‘B’, the buildings should be meaningfully repurposed for new lifestyle uses that leverage the district’s distinctive character. Proposed uses should respect and respond sensitively to the adjacent Labrador Nature Reserve.
Enlivened public spaces: The open areas around the power stations have the potential to be transformed into public spaces that can enhance visitor experience along the waterfront, and which would be connected to the surrounding recreational corridors and green spaces. The design of the public spaces could also consider how heritage structures can be repurposed in creative ways.

Who can take part?

Participants for Topic 1 will be grouped into two categories with eligibility and prizes as follows:

Topic 2: “Re-purposing a heritage power station”

Topic 2 seeks to challenge participants to come up with innovative ideas to rejuvenate and transform Power Station ‘A’ to give it a new lease of life and celebrate its rich industrial past.

As an embodiment of Singapore’s early industrialisation and the architectural style of its time, Power Station ‘A’ presents exciting possibilities for new uses to be injected in a heritage powerhouse. The large floor plate and high ceiling of the turbine and boiler halls within the power station could allow for an exciting array of events and lifestyle uses to enliven the building, while the smaller, modular layout of the upper floors could lend itself to uses that respect its intimate scale. Participants should also suggest possible ways to retrofit the interiors while highlighting its significant structural/ decorative features or architectural elements and clearly outline the proposed uses and layout for each floor. The proposal should also demonstrate the sensitive juxtaposition of old and new which adds to the distinctiveness and character of the building.
